At The Drive-InInfluential post-hardcore band At The Drive-In have announced that they will reunite to play some shows in 2012. Yesterday their official website was updated with the following message: "¡ATTENTION! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence THIS STATION IS .... NOW ....OPERATIONAL."

The band have also created an official twitter account, which currently displays the same message. Singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala also posted on his youtube page: "YES ATDI IS REUNITING FOR SOME SHOWS. AND YES A MARS VOLTA ALBUM WILL DROP VERY SOON AS WELL."

Formed in 1993 in El Paso, Texas, by guitarist Jim Ward and Bixler-Zavala, At The Drive-In quickly built a reputation for themselves through their highly energetic live shows and unique hard rock sound.

¡ATTENTION! To whom it may concern: AT THE DRIVE-IN will be breaking their 11 year silence THIS STATION IS .... NOW ....OPERATIONAL.

Relationship of CommandThree albums followed, culminating in 2000's major label debut Relationship of Command: A mind blowing mix of high octane rock and roll, powerfull hardcore punk mixed with psychedelic guitar effects courtesy of guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Amidst huge international and critical attention, the band split not long after the album's release, a hiatus that became permanent. Bixler-Zavala and Lopez-Rodriguez formed the influential Mars Volta - who took ATD-I's psychedelic elements to their logical extremes - while the rest of the band formed Sparta, fronted by Ward - who took a more straightforward but still energetic approach to punk.

In the past decade, tensions between the band's ex-members have been fraught, but in 2009 a thawing of hostilities seemed to take place. Today's announcement was still a surprise however: with a rumoured Mars Volta album expected to drop any week, it's not certain where the reunion will fit with the members' other plans. Expect more news soon: watch this space.

In the meantime, remind yourself of why At The Drive-In's were so important with these highlights from their career.
